PB Exclusive: AIM Insider's Book Excerpt

Indian activist David Seals has authored a forthcoming book, Land of The Red Giants of Ixtlan, wherein he talks about suspicions numerous indians had about Ward Churchill's ethnicity and allegiance as far back as the 1980s. The following excerpt is from that book (as well as from a chapter entitled "AIM: An Insider's History of the American Indian Movement" scheduled to appear in the anthology Eating Fire, Tasting Blood: Breaking the Silence on the American Indian Holocaust, to be published in June):
The bait was set. We waited for the jackal to come sniffing around. After a few weeks, after Steve [Robideau] had boogied to Seattle when he made bail, and I was in Denver, he called me, and asked, "What's Ward Churchill got against you?"

"What? Nothing, that I know of. Why?"

"He's calling up everybody and saying you're a Fed."

"What?!"

Steve laughed it off nervously. "Sounds like a Provocateur somewhere. Yeah. Bill Wahpepah in San Francisco called me and said Churchill had called him too, bad-mouthing you. John [Trudell] called from L.A. and said he's got all the Peltier Support Groups out there suspicious of you too."

"Calling me a Fed?"

"Yeah. An FBI agent, that's what he said to me. I told him it was bullshit, but he was pretty adamant about it."

"I barely even know the guy."

"Don't worry about it. We're all getting bad-jacketed like that all the time. It's par for the course."

"Shit." I knew in my gut we'd found the covert operative posing in our midst. Unknown to Steve, I'd already set up a trap, with the help of Chauncy [Dupree] and some other elders I'd known from the old Pedro [Bissonette] days, with some of our unconfessed "crimes" that only a cop would know.

I called an emergency AIM Security meeting at Green Grass, and ended up getting interrogated all day by some bad-asses who'd also heard the rumors from colorado and california, and didn't know whether to believe it or not. I'd been involved in acts of eco-sabotage and political robbery since 1973, and they didn't know what to think about my impending arraignment and major charges of felonies. It was a very tense and terrible time. I'd already learned that jail was death. The loss of freedom, I'd learned, was my greatest fear. It loomed like the blackest cloud of my life.

"I left out one charge," I explained to the grim, dark faces glaring at me. "A bank robbery only a cop would know, and not even a local or state cop at that. Only a fed would know it. I didn't even tell my lawyer, when we went in to plead guilty to the police station and enumerate all the other charges, so they might go easy on me. I pled guilty."

"You didn't confess to this one job?"

"No. No one knew about it but me."

"But Ward Churchill knows it?"

"Yeah."

"But how does he know it? How could only a Fed know it?"

"Because they were watching the Peltier House. For criminals or frame-ups or whatever."

"Crimes?"

"And now look at this whole Nicaragua mess he's gotten involved in, along with Russell Means."

"Yeah, we know Russ is dirty, since he skipped out during Wounded Knee and went ass-kissing in Washington D.C."

"Yeah, they're screwing up the Bros down there, in Central America, big time. I was going back and forth between the Peltier House and the Black Hills Alliance office all the time, in Rapid City. You know that. I'm on the BHA board of directors, and editor of both newspapers 'Paha Sapa Report' and 'Crazy Horse Spirit'. I've also used the stolen money to publish my book 'The Powwow Highway' because no one else would publish it, to get out the truth of what we're doing here."

"Yeah," they smiled for the first time. "That's a decent book. You published it yourself?"

"With contraband. Anyway, I'm also writing a big novel 'Thunder Nation' right now, and this Churchill character up in Boulder, at the University of Colorado I guess, must think he's a bigshot writer or something, and jealous maybe. I don't know."

"No one even knows him," another guy realized, also softening up a little, "not that I know of."

"He's no one. No one knows him, except Rascal Means."

"Shit."

Hee Haw, Paine. You'd better invest in an "NDN Mine Sweeper," 'cause you seem to be really expert at stepping onto some of the biggest landmines in Indian Country. First, the corrupt and murderous Bellecourts, then, the poseur William "Tonto" Bradford, and now, the fiction writer David "a legend in his own mind" Seals. If you fall for the crap that Seals is shoveling, then you aren't much of a horseman. Ha ha ha. Keep going, I can hardly wait for the unraveling of this one. Here's a hint: might want to ask Seals for his own genealogy. Ooooh Wheee! I am glad that somebody sent me this link. This is rich. Thanks Jimbo, I haven't laughed this hard in months.

Wow...they say you can tell a great writer by his ability to convincingly develop character. This guy must be a genius up there with the bard himself. His character starts out a deep undercover federal agent who has contact information for everybody in the movement...and then slowly morphs into an obscure professor who lives the life of a frustrated writer whom nobody knows. And you got to love the way he artfully incorporates those plugs for his other books into the narrative. Keep up the great work Jimmy...who knows, maybe one day you'll get to select the books for Oprah's Book Club.

  — wow. - 23 March '06 - 10:59
Bad-jacketed! God, I love that phrase.

Who cares whether Seals is telling the truth? In the 30-year schism between AIM and "autonomous" AIM, only a couple things are clear: both sides are utterly corrupt, and both are chained to long-discredited 60s "ideals" and rhetoric.

Seals' very language is like something from a '70s time capsule: "Boogied." "Eco-sabotage and political robbery." "Screwing up the Bros down there, in Central America, big time." It's funny stuff, but, you know, at bottom it's crazy talk (don't think of the Simpsons episode!).

Seals' self-aggrandizement, while typical of the type, is unusually naked and childlike: "I'm on the BHA board of directors, and editor of both newspapers 'Paha Sapa Report' and 'Crazy Horse Spirit'. I've also used the stolen money to publish my book 'The Powwow Highway' because no one else would publish it, to get out the truth of what we're doing here.

"Yeah," they smiled for the first time. "That's a decent book. You published it yourself?

"With contraband."

Look at me! I'm a rebel! As Tom Deer above so wisely said: "Ha ha ha."

  — jgm () (URL) - 23 March '06 - 15:18
Uh, Tom...Care to back up the poseur comment about Bradford?

  — John Ruberry () (URL) - 23 March '06 - 21:22
Well, we can back it up, Ruberry, you moron. Go search the Indianapolis Star for Mr. Bradford's name. You'll find a retraction from the columnist who first compared the fraud to Churchill. Bradford invented his entire military history, right down to the pawnshop silver stars he sported around campus.

Beyond that, he's been claiming to be an enrolled Chiricahua Apache. The problem being, there's no such thing. The Chiricahua Apache ain't federally recognized, hence you couldn't be. Furthermore, he grew up in Lansing, Michigan, seeming to preclude community recognition. You can troll any Indian chatboard where he's been and find a hell of a lot more on that. In other words, by the same standard you folks routinely apply to those you don't like, he's an ethnic fraud.

Funny how that keeps slipping through the cracks in Horowitz's work? Not to mention in the dozen or so media sources that keep propping him up. Why, it's almost like they're a gang of hypocritical frauds?

Y'know, like you.

(No links, Mr. Paine. We do our very best to be a good houseguest . . .)

  — John Moredock () - 24 March '06 - 05:49
Moredock, Bradford is Chiricahua. Fort Sill, OK is where some of the band of Chiricahua reside you idiot. There are many Chiricahua living on other reservations who are not enrolled, but they still have an on-going list of tribal members and Bradford is on that list as well as his mother. How do I know this, because I do work with the Chiricahua Alliance, a non-profit. The Fort Sill decided to become farmers like the white man wanted them to be and took land allotments. Some traditional Chiricahua resisted and Bradford is a member of this group descending through his mother. Matriarchial is what most Apache bands practice even today!

Bradford did all the things he did while in the service, but committed an act that erased all that you shumck. The military can erase anyone's history with the press of a button called "delete". He abandoned his post for good, moral cause.

Bradford knows who his ancestors are and you won't ever get that from that ass Churchill.

I grew up away from the reservation. Being raised on the rez doesn't imply community recognition because recognition comes from the family name and Bradford has that behind him as well as me. Unfortunately, Bradford's band of Chiricahua are not recognized and that doesn't mean shit. They're still Chiricahua. Just because someone isn't enrolled doesn't imply that they're not Indian? Bradford as community recognition, family lineage behind him to support his claim.

Churchill has a bunch of identity issue indians in Denver who recognize him, but it takes more than a conglamorate of enrolled Indians to be considered one. It takes family name, lineage and recognition from the community. Bradford has all these things in place whereas Churchill doesn't.

It's about time you whites start thinking outside the box!!

I have Bradford's back and I'm Apache. How much more backup do you need you moron!!

  — The Joker - 24 March '06 - 09:05
Hmmmm....just spent some time going through Front Page...no reference to, "enrolled" Chiricahua". Can't find any reference to Bradford claiming to be, "enrolled".

Bradford invented part of his military history, not the entire part.

  — DWG () - 24 March '06 - 09:12
Well, actually, I never claimed you weren't an Indian, Bradford. I couldn't care less. I simply noted you weren't enrolled, making you and several media figures around these parts flat-out liars, as they and you have repeatedly claimed that you were - Caplis and Silverman on several of their shows, for instance. If you are, email me a xerox of your enrollment card and I'll be happy to post it over on my site. I also bet Mr. Paine would do the same, as even he has denounced you. I also noted that by the standards people like Caplis and Silverman or Horowitz or O'Reilly or Paine hold Churchill up to, you're an ethnic fraud. I actually disagree with that reasoning, but am just marveling at their hypocritical inconsistency.

As to the military record bit, that's really your defense? That all your records were deleted and a rather mediocre career in the Army Reserves was put in their place?

I'll let that speak for itself.

  — John Moredock () - 24 March '06 - 09:21
True, DWG, he only made up the parts about having ever seen combat and/or exhibited anything like heroism.

Thanks for catching that.

Is this what passes for intellectual honesty around here?

  — John Moredock () - 24 March '06 - 09:24
Moredock can't you read idiot...only at Fort Sill are there enrolled Chiricahua! Other Chiricahua who didn't choose land allotments are not enrolled or recognized, but they still have there rolls of which Bradford is listed on. When there is an on-going list that is unoffical no one gets a card because it's not offical in the sense that it's not recognized by anybody but the group is applies to hence the Chiricahua.

I'm white and even I picked up on that! What an idiot you are Moredock the moron!!

I couldn't care less about Caplis & Silverman and all those other right wingers who are after any bit of information about Churchill.

At least Bradford served his country. What have you done but attend events at CU and complain about education, oh yes and let's not forget how you follow Churchill around, buy his books and basically support the ass!

  — Batman - 24 March '06 - 17:22
Got it. Bradford's on an entirely unverifiable list as to his being an Apache - but it counts as enrollment. And his military records were erased in a secret military plot to discredit him.

Not a whole lot to add to your line of argument, Bradford/Joker/Batman/Melvin. Except that if this is what Caplis/Silverman/O'Reilly/Horowitz were buying they're even dumber or more disingenuous than I thought.

Which is saying a mouthful.

Might I suggest you quit while you're ahead? There are still four or five pinheads out there who, inexplicably, have some faith left in your integrity.

  — John Moredock () - 24 March '06 - 20:36
Moredock you truly believe Bradford would get on this site and post a discussion with psuedos! You're more of an idiot than I thought!! No you're arrogant to think that he would take the time to discuss anything with you especially on a site like this! Get a clue dude!!

  — Robin - 26 March '06 - 18:47
Who really cares about Bradford? He's a semicolon in a footnote in a technical journal about life's meaningless trivia. But, what the hell happened to Seals? (not that he's not a semicolon, too) After all, wasn't the original post about Seals' horse shi*t masquerading as AIM history? It's not like him to miss out on a conversation that would enable him to self-promote. Perhaps we said something that upset or embarrassed him. David, please come back. I'm not quite finished with you.

  — Tom Deer - 29 March '06 - 12:07
Don’t hold your breath, Mr. Deer. This gang of inveterate liars just kind of fades when they get called out.

As to you, Robin, unless we’ve somehow managed to attract a sizable fan-base in the sleepy burg of Carmel, Indiana, William Bradford spends the better part of most days maniacally pumping the refresh button over on our site. We posted his site stats the other day, and he leaves comments fairly frequently under the name Melvin.

Trust, there ain’t much ego involved in having attracted a wholly fraudulent, disemployed adjunct. Especially William Bradford, who seems to have quite the reputation on Indiana law blogs/sites for launching bizarrely ludicrous defenses of himself under pseudonyms. It’s fun reading and should take you about ten seconds to Google. (Calling to mind the question: do you investigate any subject whatsoever before piping up?)

Dude.

  — John Moredock () - 30 March '06 - 14:26
April Fools, what a shock this right-wing website can't deal with someone who isn't one of their own who loathes the Lurch too. So it makes me a liar to agree with you?

  — Seals () - 01 April '06 - 21:39
Bradford, fake Indian.

Churchill, fake Indian.

Bradford, bogus research.

Churchill, bogus research.

Bradford, bogus military claims.

Churchill, bogus military claims.

Bradford, nutcase jerk.

Churchill, nutcase jerk.

Next.

  — Wardford - 01 April '06 - 22:12
I seem to recall an article in Indian Country Today a few years back on fake Indians. Prominent in that article were the names of Ward Churchill and David Seals.

  — Obiwanagi () - 02 April '06 - 08:29
"Almost as color defines vision itself, race shapes the cultural eye - what we do and do not notice, the reach of empathy and the alignment of response." - Taylor Branch's first line of his biography of M.L.King might be a better starting point if a serious discussion is wanted, rather than Tim Giago's BIA-funded hate. Or is anyone who isn't an ultranationalist persona non grata to these commentators? Has Churchill achieved his purpose by alienating anyone who believes in civil rights of whatever color? Is it just that these commentators don't give a rat's ass about Indians?

And what of the Indians who bring up race? T.E. Lawrence had a good one about that in 'Seven Pillars of Wisdom': "Pray God that men reading the story will not, for love of the glamour of strangeness, go out to prostitute themselves and their talents in serving another race. I could not sincerely take on the Arab skin; it was an affectation only."
